ASA Post Mortem

If you have visited the new site of the Black Cube series, you might have discovered the Post Mortem article that I wrote about ASA. I found it interesting to summarize all that happened around my first game and I will certainly write more things like that in the future.

An all new site!

With Catyph coming next year, and my will to continue the Black Cube series (alone or not), I decided to create an all new website to gather ASA, Catyph, and all other projects related to the Cubes.

This blog will continue to exist in order to give news about the series. The other web domains ( and will probably be abandoned sooner or later, and as you can see they are already redirecting to the new website. I hope you like the new artwork of Catyph and the design of the site!

Feel free to send me your feedback or questions!

I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that I send all my news (about the Black Cube, but much more!) to The Icehouse collective that I helped founding last year. It's a great team of indie artists and gamedevs who help each other, and I'm glad to be part of this worldwide experience that everyone can join with a creative project, and enough motivation to support us. If you like the Black Cube, please follow The Icehouse on Tumblr or Facebook. You could discover the work of creative artists such as John Carvajal, Luminy Studios, Sand Kerion, Kiboochan, Beckoning Cat, and many more... or simply enjoy the writings and newsletter of our manager Roger RKT! I'll be there too.

Thanks a lot!

CATYPH: still working hard!

Sorry that during the last weeks I didn't give a lot of news about my projects, here on the Black Cube blog. The truth is that I had hope that you would learn more details about CATYPH through the internet press. In last September (like several times during the past 15 months), I contacted a large variety of websites and magazines (indie & famous sites), providing screenshots, trailers, and even a private playable version with 3 regions of moon Tytaah. I am at the disposal of anyone who wants to publish news/exclusive details about my upcoming game

I am also quite active on The Icehouse collective blog/Facebook, on several forums, and everywhere I can (but I can't be everywhere!). I really hoped that a few articles would be written about my upcoming game here and there, and that I would get some exposure before the final release, but nothing happened yet. It would seem that a Myst-like game that is self-funded doesn't raise that much of attention. So I will just continue to do my best, and hopefully things will start to change with the upcoming Beta-Tests (January?).

For the time being, there aren't many thrilling news to share: I'm working very hard 7/7 on Catyph, trying to finish the development for the begining of 2016 as promised. It would not be very interesting to show you screen captures of the process, which consists in writing lines of code/scripting actions in Visionaire Studio. Enough screenshots of the game were already shared in the past: if I show you more, you won't have anything to discover in the game! There might already be several spoilers in the previously revealed screens.

While working on Catyph, I am also taking part to a Community Playthrough of ASA: A Space Adventure on the forums of Adventure Gamers.
My choices during the development of ASA have been largely commented there, and I have tried to explain objectively how I created the game, and the choices we made with Andrea Rinaldi for the Remastered Edition.
And it is not finished! So I will continue to answer to all questions related to ASA (and indirectly Catyph) until the end of the Community Playthrough. It is a very interesting experience and I will try to reconduct it as often as possible.

In the meantime, I ask you to be patient. Please don't forget that most of the time I am alone to work on Catyph, so I hope you can forgive me if I take too much time to publish any update about the development. Thank you :)

"Catyph might not be in realtime 3D and might not be perfect; it might not be as ambitious as Obduction; it might not be as immersive as Xing, as Riven-ish as Haven Moon, or as beautiful as Quern; put simply, Catyph might not be the most anticipated of all upcoming First Person Adventure games of 2016; but Catyph will be your favorite indie FPA of 2016! The game is vast to explore, with a long lifetime, an interesting SciFi story and incredible puzzles. Myst fans, rejoice!"

Summer is gone

If you're curious about my projects, you probably realised that I have not posted any single news here since the month of July. I have been very busy this Summer, working very hard on Catyph, and I wanted to be "at peace" during that time, in order to make as many progress as possible with the development of the game. I am happy to say that it was productive: I have assembled 3 of the 8 regions of the game in Visionaire Studio, for a gameplay of about 3~5 hours already. The 5 next regions can be programmed quite quickly in 2 or 3 months, because all the graphics are finished. I still plan to release Catyph by the end of 2015 or beginning 2016, on Steam and the Adventure Gamers shop.

I also took 2 weeks to go on holidays and change my mind. Having my head in the stars all the time is quite exhausting, so going back to green was beneficial. Since I have returned, I have been working on a new trailer of the game, that I will try to share with everyone on next week.

On another subject:
some people have asked me how they could get in touch with me and discuss of my projects day after day. Anyone can feel free to contact me by email (even if I cannot always reply - I will have to avoid long discussions). However I am always doing my best to be available on the internet, and you can find me easily on several video games forums.
For French people: Planete Aventure and
For the others: Adventure Gamers.
And more. But I can't be everywhere, unfortunately.

You can also follow my work on The Icehouse ( where all the news about my projects are forwarded sooner or later. You can get in touch directly with me through the facebook page of The Icehouse too! It would be great if our collective could have more than 62 followers :)

I hope all of you also had a very nice Summer this year, and could take a few days to relax. I'll be back soon with some news about Catyph, so stay tuned!

Catyph - graphics finished

This is now official, I have finished 98% of the graphics of the game. I just finished working on the ending movie which is finally quite long (over 5 minutes of animation - not bad for a single person!).
What about the 2% left you may ask? They're graphical assets that will be used in the various interfaces of the game, so they will be created during the rest of the development.

Maybe you don't realize it, but having finished the graphics of the game is really a big step, because even if it is my favorite part of the work, it is also the stage that takes the biggest efforts and time. I expect to finish the development in Visionaire Studio during Summer if everything goes well, and hopefully I can release a first private version of the full game in a September or October. I still want to release the game in 2015 and I'm doing my best. There's just so much to manage for me on my own that it's impossible to say for sure if I will be ready in time.

I would also like to share a playable demo of around 1 hour during Summer, introducing the beginning of the game, in order to show everyone what the game will be like.

Here's a summary of the game progress:

- ideas, story: 100%
- puzzles and level design: 100%
- in-game diary: 15%
- graphics: 98%
- music: 100%
- sound effects: 60%
- voices: 100%
- development/programing: 25%
- menus: 80%
- additonal features (bonuses, easy mode, translations): 0%

What else?

Just get in touch if you have questions!
Have a beautiful Summer :)

ASA Gameplay #5 #6

As you know, I have decided to share with you a series of gameplay videos of ASA, created by Radimir, a fan of the game. I have been quite busy lately with the production of the ending movie of Catyph, so I couldn't share with you the 2 last videos. Finally you can see them below!

If you liked this series, please follow Radimir on his youtube channel, because he will for sure post more videos of more games (including Catyph someday?).

This is the complete list of videos (parts 1 to 6):

DVD of ASA Remastered released

The HD Remake of ASA: A Space Adventure (which is available on Steam and other stores) has recently received updates that fixed important bugs. All known issues were fixed and the game should now run fine on all supported systems. That is exactly what we were waiting for, in order to release the Icehouse self-published DVD of ASA: Remastered Edition!

As you could see in the Launch Trailer of the game, the DVD was meant to release a few days after the digital release, but finally we chose to wait a little longer and make sure that everything works perfectly. We are sorry if you have been waiting all that time!
Despite the hard work made during the Beta Test process, we know that there are always a few issues that occur after the game release, depending on everyone else' computers and settings. At least this DVD edition should be 100% working, and I think it was worth waiting for it. I have also added a few bonuses on the disc, in order to fill the free space still available after adding the game for Windows, Mac and Linux.

More details on the shop of The Icehouse!

ASA Gameplay #4

We can finally discover the 4th part of the gameplay series of ASA, created by Radimir. This time, he takes us through planet Kepler, until the discovery of planet Forte...

Catyph 3D Fanart

My brother Yves has been modeling this great version of the astronaut as a fanart. He made it with Zbrush, with his own style, and it's really impressive when you know how challenging it can be to create a character in 3D! Many thanks, bro ;)

ASA Gameplay #3

Here's the 3rd of the very nice gameplay videos created by Radikov. It's just great to discover the game, and you'll have the possibility to use the whole series as a walkthrough of ASA. Quite useful! Thanks Radimir, good job!

Catyph - 1st screens of Palak

I'm very happy to share, together with the Icehouse collective, the first screens of region Palak in my next game CATYPH! Palak is the 6th region that I have revealed, and it is also the last one. The previous ones were Kynan, Saad, Vysynia, Darnaha and Raju.

I will try to share more pics with you soon. The most important is that the development of the game is going well.
Despite a lot of troubles and being late (mainly because of the HD Remake of ASA - now available on Steam), I'm confident that Catyph will be interesting, and maybe a bit more mature than its predecessor, with more detailed graphics and more logical puzzles.

A lot of good things have happened lately, and for example the soundtrack of the game, composed by Karreo, is finished and ready to be implemented in the game. Of course there is still a very lot of work of development before the release - as I said, I'm late. Yet the game should release this year as expected. More news in 2015 :)

ASA-R important update for Windows, Mac and Linux

If you have purchased ASA: Remastered Edition on Steam, or Adventure Gamers Store, or another store, please download the game again (or auto-update on Steam), because important issues were fixed.

Everything is explained here:

Here's a copy of the Steam forums (from the same link):
" There was a critical bug with the savegame system of the game related to Visionaire Studio in the development:
On PCForte: after loading the game, the button of the keyboard will not work anymore.
On Kepler: after loading the game, the levers on the trees don't work anymore.

Simon and Andy, with the help of the Visionaire Studio team, have successfully fixed this bug, and the game was updated.

If you had this problem, your current savegame is definetely broken (the bug is saved inside), and we are very sorry for that. We have shared working savegames below.

Your own savegames are here:
C:\Users\[your_username]\AppData\Local\Simon Says Play\ASA Remastered\Savegames

You need to delete them, or the game will still be broken.

The game was successfully updated on May 5th, 2015.

Mac and Linux versions have also been updated on May 14th, 2015.

- savegame issues (PC Forte and Kepler trees)
- launch issues on OSX and Linux (files permissions update) = should fix most error messages

Please let us know if there are any problems with the new updates.
Update ---

If you had the issue with the PC Forte or the Kepler trees, you can use the following guide and download working savegames.

- go to C:\Users\[your_username]\AppData\Local\Simon Says Play

- your config files could be broken by the VS savegame issue (before the update), so it's recommended to do some clean up: rename the ASA Remastered folder to something else (backup, for example)

- then you have 2 choices:

(1) start a new game from the beginning - it should be clean and 100% working
(2) use the savegames provided by Simon

If you choose (2):

- download the new files here:

- extract the content of this archive into the Simon Says Play folder (see above)

- now you should have a new ASA Remastered folder, with the working savegames inside.

- play the game and load one of the 3 savegames.

About the savegames provided ---

- you have found the diary memory cards from the Teleport room, the Greenhouse and the Control room (january, february, march).
- the safe in the greenhouse was opened
- the light in the control room was turned on
- the blue memory card (translation) was inserted in the device of PC Forte
- the Terran keyboard was sucessfully plugged on PC Forte
- the additional commands were found in the "personal" file on PC Forte

- everything from savegame1
- the command to open the airlock was entered successfully
- airlock opened

- everything from savegame2
- you have the diary memory card from the Bridge (april).
- you have landed on Kepler and walked until the levers on the trees
!!! the trap with the wooden jail was not activated (doesn't infer with the rest of the game)

Good luck, and once again, we apologize for all this mess!

ASA Gameplay #2

This is the second video of Radicov Gameplay that covers the whole ASA game. There are some spoilers but if you're uncertain to play the game someday, it's worth watching it!

ASA Gameplay #1

I was quite excited when "Radikov Gameplay" sent me this video of gameplay of ASA: A Space Adventure. This is only the first one of a series, in order to cover the whole game, so I have decided to share his future videos of the game too. I know he really played ASA with passion, and would really like to play Catyph too. This is a good way to discover the game if you don't feel ready to purchase it now, so please have a look at the video and consider sharing it if you like. Thanks!

April 1st jokes

The 1st of April is always a dangerous day: you never know in which trap you will fall when you read things here and there! Maybe I got tricked myself by someone and I don't even know yet?

Anyway, I thought you might want me to confirm that, yes, the article posted yesterday about The Choral Cube was one of these stupid jokes, so I hope you had found by yourself! We're not going to make a crossover between ASA and The Coral Cave, and we're not going to use RPG Maker.

The Choral Cube, crossover ASAxCoralCave

Following a discussion (in french) on the forums of Planète Aventure, Icehouse Member Simon Says Play! (yes, it's me) and our Friends Atelier Sentô are proud to announce an exceptional cooperation with the development of their next indie game project The Choral Cube, a revolutionary project of J-RPG born of their very different worlds, mixing both The Black Cube series (ASA, Catyph) and The Coral Cave game. We’re excited to reveal the first exclusive screenshot and artworks.

The Choral Cube will be developed in Japan by Ts1 Lirpa Studios with the well-known RPG Maker engine, and will be fully funded thanks to the incredibly high sales of ASA: Remastered Edition.
“The Choral Cube tells the story of Mizuka, the little girl created by Atelier Sentô. While she walks in her village, she discovers a black cube in the sand. This cube has a mysterious power and sings an unknown song from another world.
Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves
In labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant tide
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine

Mizuka will have to understand the meaning of these words, which will open a path for her only. She will then travel through the Cube and through Space, and reach an unbelievable place made of starfishes and pink planet-candies.“

Atelier Sentô will draw and animate the 5 hours of cutscenes, in a new and expressive manga style. They have already started working on this new graphic style and are training themselves very hard thanks to this wonderful blog.

We are also very happy to announce that Simon Mesnard will give his own voice to the Cube, and will record a special remastered version of Pink Floyd - Echoes, especially for the game.

We can’t wait to reveal more about this crazy project, and we will let you know as soon as possible! Stay tuned on!

No GOG release / Savegame bug / future

Hi everyone,
here's a list of updates on my projects since the release of ASA Remastered.

No GOG release
several of you asked me if there would be a GOG release of ASA: Remastered Edition. I have contacted GOG some time ago and shared the game with them. We have received their answer this morning: it's no, and we are sorry if you were looking for this version. There won't be a GOG release of the game. I won't give the details, but they're "not convinced" and not encouraged by the "lack of attention on Steam". We can understand...

Icehouse DVD
I remember that there were a few people waiting for the Icehouse self-published DVD of ASA. This DVD is still in progress and I have even purchased a copy for myself, to check the quality. We thought it would be ready this week, unfortunately, a critical bug has just been found in the game (see below), and we want to fix it before the physical release.

Savegame bug
Regarding this bug, it was found by people playing with the Steam version, but we know that it happens on all versions.

Description of the bug:
You play and everything is working fine, but you're tired and decide to make a manual savegame and quit the game. When you load your savegame later, you discover that a button or hotspot is not working anymore and looks like disabled. Whatever you try, you cannot continue the game and solve the puzzle: you're stuck. It happens on PC Forte and planet Kepler, and maybe in other scenes.

It is a bug in the manual savegame system, and it is related to the Visionaire Studio software. As you know, ASA was developed with Visionaire, and we have asked their team to help us fix this issue. As soon as they release an update of their soft, this issue should be fixed.

Temporary solution:
While you play, do not use the manual savegames. Use the autosave feature instead. There are quite a lot of autosave points. For example everytime you come back to the Central Room of the Ark, the game is automatically saved. The autosave is temporarily disabled if you have just saved, and will be available again after 1 minute.

About the future of my games:
As you probably know, I had decided to create ASA Remastered Edition after the game was greenlit on Steam, and particularly because there were many technical issues in ASA Original Edition created with Adventure Maker, which is quite an old engine.
I had hope that ASA Remastered would convince GOG this time, and that the game would run fine on most computers. I have to admit that I am disapointed, and as a result, tired. However I will not give up and will continue to fight in order to solve the last issues with this version, and in order to release Catyph in the best circumstances. However, I am seriously thinking to use a new graphic engine to replace Visionaire Studio. I am looking for something even more reliable, where I wouldn't have all these bugs, and maybe I will try to learn Unity or another software - I don't know yet (maybe I will just keep Visionaire). Catyph would still be a 2D game (made of prerendered backgrounds) but I absolutely want  to avoid all these problems after the release. I think it's important that I increase my skills with Unity someday, and that my future games use this tool (or another one like UDK), but on the other hand it's a real challenge for me alone, and it could delay even more the release of Catyph. I have not taken any decision yet and I will let you know as soon as possible.

In the meantime, I hope you like ASA Remastered Edition, despite these unexpected issues, and I hope that you're still waiting for Catyph. If you want to encourage me and my work, the best thing to do is help me get more visibility, and so, to spread the word about my games as much often as possible, the release of ASA, the upcoming Catyph, or The Icehouse collective ( You can help me and my collective on Facebook, on Tumblr or anywhere else, and we'd be honored to have more followers! I really need your help this way. Thank you very much -Simon.

The ASA/Icehouse #contest

Following the release of ASA Remastered

ASA: Remastered Edition released yesterday on Steam. You also have now the possibility to purchase the game on the Zodiac Store here

There has been a few problems with the Mac and Linux versions on Steam: they were not launching at all from the Steam application. It seems that we have successfully solved the issue - we hope!

If anyone has any problem to run the game, it is important to tell us as soon as possible. Please contact us by email on The Icehouse, or on my personal website
We will work to fix such an issue as fast as possible.

The DVD edition will be available in a few days, as soon as we are sure that the game works fine on all machines.

Quite a lot of youtubers have received a free Steam key on request. We hope you will have the opportunity to discover the game thanks to them. Have a look on youtube from time to time to see if you find interesting videos about ASA Remastered!

Have you seen this wonderful watercolor by Atelier Sentô, on their blog or on The Icehouse? Olivier and Cécile are working on a very beautiful handmade point & click named The Coral Cave. I am following their work since several months now, and I love it. Have a look too!

The Ark has been launched again

ASA: Remastered Edition is now officially released on Steam.

This is the trailer of this new edition.

Thank you very much to everyone who supported me. I really hope you will like the game as much as other people liked the original edition 2 years ago. It has been a tough work to recreate ASA from scratch with another engine. Honestly we could have just re-released the game "as is" on Steam. I mean, it's the original edition from 2012 that was greenlit in 2014, and we had absolutely no obligation to develop this Remastered Edition! ASA on Steam could have been the exact same game than on Desura actually. We just thought it was much better to improve it for you, and a way to show that I am doing my best to create interesting games. It is important for me that you like ASA, even if I know it's not perfect. The graphics could probably be much better, and in realtime 3d, but we're really a small team (actually we were just 2 people on this game!). Andrea Rinaldi did an impressive job to recreate ASA in Visionaire Studio, and I know he didn't sleep a lot lately (neither did I!). I would like to take this opportunity to remind that I am now working on Catyph: The Kunci Experiment (, which is another point & click game in the Black Cube series. The development of Catyph has been much slower than expected, particularly because of ASA: Remastered, but I think that it's worth it. If you have the possibility to play ASA and if you like it, please keep in mind that Catyph will come soon. I wish you a good space adventure :) -Simon

ASA Remastered - ready to release!

This is now official: ASA Remastered Edition will release on Steam the 4th of March (yes, tomorrow!).

Self-published DVD cover

I am happy to present the final DVD cover of ASA: Remastered Edition! This is what it will look like if you purchase the self-published DVD from the Icehouse Shop.
As you can see, the front features the artwork of planet Kepler and the Ark spaceship, and the back shows Marina's notes (that you could see in a previous article below).

I really hope you like it, because I personally like the result and I think I will use the same template for the future Catyph DVD!

Of course, the DVD version is more "collector", and you will have the possibility to purchase a standard digital version of ASA.

More details soon about the (very close) release!

ASA notes - The most beautiful present

The most beautiful present, when you make an adventure game, is to know that some people enjoyed it and really felt as if they were having a true journey through the different environments. When I saw the notes of Marina (see below), and everything she wrote on her papers in order to solve the puzzles of ASA (and her illustrations!), I felt a lot of emotions. Amazing!!! Now I am sure that ASA was not made in vain and I really hope that Catyph will bring as much excitement, and maybe more. Thank you again Marina, that was the most beautiful present!

ASA Remastered/Original comparison #4

The Beta-Test is almost finished. We've found an horrible lot of troubles and issues to fix, but we're very happy of the result! I'd like to thank personally all the people who got involved in the process and helpd ASA: Remastered Edition get a step closer to the final release. I am still uncertain of the exact release date, but it should be by the end of the month. Stay tuned!

ASA artbook

To celebrate the 200th article on this blog, I have a little present!

You may know that I have been working last year on a self-published artbook of ASA? It contains almost all the 900+ backgrounds in 3D from the original game, along with some watercolors and wireframe views, showing how the pictures were created.

The printed version is quite expensive (because of self-publishing prices) but the result is very good in my opinion, as you can see in the photos below. However, because of the too high price of this book, I have decided to release for free a preview PDF that you can read for free on the link below:

Read ASA artbook on Issuu

You can turn pages by clicking in the dark grey areas on the border of your screen. Enjoy!

I plan to release the same kind of book for Catyph later, except that it will have even more content, with a making of and pictures taken during the development process.
