Characters list complete

I have finished the list of all characters of Catyph. There are 4 of them that you can meet (more or less) + the hero. You will almost never see the hero as is, because you play through his eyes in this 1st person adventure game.

Germinal and Lantier will be your main interlocutors. They will bring you various missions and informations. I can’t reveal the true identity of the Friend of Germinal and The Masked Man ;)

So the game Catyph promises a mysterious journey to a mysteriously inhabited moon called Tytaah, to the discovery of mysterious puzzles and at the encounter of mysterious characters. I hope you find it mysterious enough!

Don't forget to follow these news on Facebook too! It's a good way to encourage new people to follow the development of the game! Thanks!

Introducing your new nightmare

I'm very happy to introduce the character of Germinal (quick rough and 3D model below). He is a very important person in the game Catyph. He will test you through various challenging puzzles (that will make you cry) to see if you have the skills for a specific mission : igniting the Kunci, a mecanism he created for an unknown purpose… Doesn’t it sound mysterious? :) Maybe I should add that Germinal is the only character who owns a Black Cube on moon Tytaah, which gives him incredible powers! On top of that, he says that he may destroy Terra soon !!!

Black Cube pictures

Some of the most “sci-fi-istic” pics from The Black Cube series!

At the beginning, there was an unknown spaceship called the Ark, gathering the knowledge of all living beings in the Universe. Then a Black Cube, found in 2011 around Terra by the astronaut Philip Forte who mysteriously disapeared. Many events happened during the following years. The rebellions of the 2030s leaded by Yan Forte, the discovery of a black die and the invention of the Blue Matter in 2062 that would become the most incredible technology ever created by Men…

General Lantier

This is a picture of general Lantier at TerAce headquarters. He’s the character that will brief you in Catyph. While you (the hero) are visiting Tytaah, a moon of planet Catyph, your home planet Terra is being attacked by an unknown spaceship. Terran people become hysterical and Lantier is the person in charge of the situation there. He believes that there’s a link between your arrival on Tytaah and the spaceship of Terra, and he asks you to investigate the mysterious buildings that you discovered on the moon…

Catyph Figurine #3

Yesterday you could discover how I created the body of the astronaut with the copper wire and the Fimo paste. I took different views of the result before painting. My biggest disapointment is about the helmet, that I didn’t succeed to reproduce with more accuracy. The figurine is 15 cm height, including the cookie (sorry, the socle :p), so you can imagine how small the head is. Anyway, the modeling is far from perfect but I’m happy with it and I had a good time working on this short project.
About the painting, I didn’t meet many difficulties, except for the small size of the details. I started by covering the whole Fimo paste in black acrylic. It required 2 pass to be perfect. Then I was surprised to discover that the red paint didnn’t work well over the black one. As a result, even with 3 pass, we can still see the black under the red stripes. In the end, it was almost as long to paint than to model, because of the drying time between each pass.

The final result tomorrow !

Catyph Figurine #2

Sequel to the modeling of my figurine of the astronaut, hero of Catyph.

Yesterday I shared with you the tools, and some of you asked me what I was planning to do exactly with the copper wire. The answer is in the photos: I create a kind of skeleton. It’s very basic but makes things much easier in order to build the figurine. This step is very important and will define the pose of your character. For example here, I can tell that I made his legs a bit too short… Then I create balls of dough that I roll more or less, smaller or bigger, to create strands that I attach to the copper skeleton. Easy as it seems!
When the Fimo paste is starting to be delicate to manipulate, I heat it in the oven, 30min 110°C. When it’s done and cold again, I add more dough strands and balls, sometimes very very small to create the details (buttons, belt…), then I heat it again, and so on, until the modeling is finished! Anyone can do it.

Modeling #2

I forgot to share these 2 pics! These are new modeling+texturing from 2 objects in the game Catyph. The first one is an old oilcan and the second one is a transport pod. I decided to show it with the door opened, but of course, you’ll have to solve a challenging puzzle before you can visit it :)

Catyph Figurine #1

In my lost hours, I'm preparing a figurine of the hero of Catyph. I don't know if the result will be good, but I decided to share the steps with you. Today, I'll focus on the preparations.

I started with the 3D model that I use in the game. Some people could ask why not making a 3D print, but I prefer something hand made. First thing I notice is that the suit will be difficult to reproduce. The curvy shapes are suddenly broken by edges, and the material of the whole thing is very smooth, like perfect plastic.

I don’t have much tools, and for most of the modeling I will use my fingers. I have a pack of Fimo paste (350g) but I plan to use only the half of it. Then I have pliers to work the initial wire. For this I chose electric wire, and I removed the rubber outside with scissors. I think copper wire is perfect, easy to bend and to cut. Finally I’ll use a knife to cut the Fimo paste, in order to make specific shapes sometimes. And small brushes with acrylic paint. Acrylic gives good results on a figurine, is cheap and easy to wash and to find in shops. With this I’m ready to go. Next steps tomorrow!

ASA Greenlit!

Incredible. ASA: A Space Adventure, the game introducing the very first Black Cube, has just been greenlit. This is not the end for the ASA project, it's the beginning of something great for the Black Cube series, and I'm sure it will benefit to the Catyph project! I deeply thank all of you who followed this blog and gave me a continuous support. Thank you! -Simon

Modeling #1

Modeling and texturing of 2 objects from Catyph : the “binary box” (which will be very useful to solve a puzzle at the beginning of the game), and the “kissing gate” (usually used for horses or cows, but on Catyph I can do what I want!).
